AHIP focusing on health care affordability, CEO says
Health care affordability is the “north star” for AHIP, its president and CEO said Monday at the opening of the association’s annual Medicare, Medicaid, Duals and Commercial Markets Forum in Washington.
Mike Tuffin told those in attendance that AHIP is working with lawmakers and regulators to lower the cost of health care for everyone while improving access to care.
“Affordability is the issue discussed at every kitchen table in America,” he said.
In 2026, healthcare costs in the United States are experiencing their most significant surge in over 15 years, with total spending expected to reach approximately $5.3 trillion. This spike is driven by a convergence of major policy changes, rising medical prices, and the introduction of expensive new therapies.
Tuffin listed AHIP’s four visions and commitments, which are:
- Promote more competition, especially for prescription drug coverage.
- Advocate for site-of-service reforms.
- Tackle what he called “the administrative morass” that holds back the performance of the health care system.
- Better align incentives that drive value programs.
“We are committed to doing our part to reduce friction and improve the health care experience,” he said.
Tuffin said AHIP will focus its efforts in 2027 on advocating for electronic prior authorization.
The MMDC Forum brings together leaders and decision-makers who create and implement policies impacting Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and the commercial markets. More than 1,000 leaders from health plans, government and the broader health care ecosystem are attending.
